Workshop Overview
This workshop will examine the rationale, philosophy, and justification for developing a health promotion committee and network of health champions in the workplace.  Essential program components including design, planning, recruiting, marketing, implementation and other considerations will be analyzed.   Upon completion of this workshop, participants should be able to describe the steps and considerations to developing a worksite health promotion committee and network of champions for employers and employees, describe where to look for existing resources for the forming these structures, and describe how health promotion committees and networks are designed, implemented and effective in the workplace.

A key focus of the two day workshop will be for participants who consult with employers.  An emphasis on how to present the information and knowledge to employer contacts in a consulting engagement will be made throughout the workshop.
 

Workshop Description
Day 1 includes primarily knowledge building with 1 ½ hours of presentations in the morning. The morning will emphasize wellness committee performance. The afternoon includes 2 hours of presentations emphasizing building a network of champions. Case studies, practical exercises and group discussions shape the workshop. Es-sential program components including design, planning, recruiting, marketing, implementation and other considerations will be presented and discussed.

Day 2 is primarily designed to develop practical solutions for challenges faced in the employer environment. Brief 15 minute presentations are followed 60 minutes of group discussions using practical exercises and case studies to generate discussion and solutions. Participants establish a list of workshop goals, common challenges and needs at the start of Day 1. The content of knowledge sharing sessions and the practical exercise are tailored to address the unique re-quests of participants.

Presenter Bio
Dr. Phil Smeltzer joined the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in October 2014 as the Program Administrator, Total Population Health. He is responsible for health improvement activities and strategies for patient populations served by MUSC Health through both inpatient and ambulatory care.  Previously Philp was a Managing Consultant, Employer Solutions at Optum for five years.  There Philip evaluated health promotion and health management programs for primarily Fortune 100 clients. Philip was the Vice President, Health Care Quality Improvement HealthNow NY in upstate New York.  He worked in the managed care arena in a variety of roles including quality improvement, information, health promotion and disease management for 12 years. Philip was responsible for the design, development and implementation of the preventive care and wellness programs at Humana for four years.  Dr. Smeltzer has also worked as an Associate Director with the Wellness Institute of Buffalo an advocacy agency.  Dr. Smeltzer was a field product manager for Abbott Diagnostics after serving as a Marine Corps Officer on active duty for 5 years and the Reserves for 19 years. Dr. Smeltzer holds a Master of Science Degree from Canisius College, Bachelor of Arts from Oregon State University.  Philip obtained his PhD at the University of Louisville, School of Public Health and Information Science in Health Promotion and Behavioral Science.  His academic interests have focused on obesity management and the use of communication techniques to change behavior.  Phil relocated to Charleston SC with his wife Emily from Montana.
