2010 ACSM's Health & Fitness Summit & Exposition Highlights
This meeting was held April 7-10, 2010 in Austin, Texas, USA.  The meeting bridged the gap between science and practice for the fitness professional, broadly defined. Attendees represented a vast array of professions, including the worksite health promotion practitioner. The Summit boasted nine tracks, including one dedicated to Worksite Health Promotion sessions.

IAWHP Pre-Conference Workshop
Emerging Trends in Worksite Health Promotion: Creating, Maintaining and Sustaining Forward Momentum
Held on April 7, 2010

Description:
A key strategy for improved health and business performance for any organization, independent of size or international location is to identify practice-based knowledge of what works and what generates optimal participation in worksite health promotion programs and services. This pre-conference workshop presented by the International Association for Worksite Health Promotion (IAWHP) will provide the business justification for establishing and maintaining an organization’s worksite health promotion mission as well as offer an understanding of the emerging trends in programming in the U.S. and the international community. Additionally, hands-on application of successful programming strategies and a look at the underlying principles of managing in-house programs will be addressed. This workshop will also offer an opportunity for the participants to interact with the speakers and other session participants to build a stronger social network to maintain contacts after the workshop.

The World of Worksite Health: Global Trends and Challenges

Health promotion is an increasingly popular strategy among employers worldwide. This session will explore the latest global developments and business issues driving strategies for workplace well-being. Evidence will include the findings from Buck Consultants' latest global wellness survey of 1,100 employers, representing more than 10 million employees in 45 countries).

Mental Well-Being and Resilience at the Workplace - a European Priority

The European Pact for Mental Health and Well-Being was announced in 2008 out of concern to recent surveys and figures showing an increase in work-related mental disease and a lack of engagement at the workplace. A consensus paper on mental health in workplace settings was subsequently released outlining critical factors and resources for the promotion of mental well-being. A growing number of employers in Europe are taking a proactive approach to the mental health of their employees transforming from purely individually oriented programs (e.g., coping skills, EAP) to team and organizationally oriented strategies. This presentation will highlight the organizational approach to mental well-being and introduce a European case study. 
 
Onsite Programming: Ideas that Work

"If you offer it, will they come?"  A challenge for many worksite health promotion professionals is developing and offering creative and innovative programming.  This presentation will address a variety of program strategies to enhance your existing programs and methods to increase your participation from your hard to reach employee/retiree/dependent base.  Ideas, case studies and successful target market tactics will be discussed for the small, large or multi-facility worksite
 
In-house fitness management- developing and planning a comprehensive program

Speaker Bio’s
Lauve Metcalfe, M.S. FAWHP is an organizational health consultant specializing in marketing and program development of health promotion and wellness information to consumers. Ms. Metcalfe is on the faculty at the University of Arizona, where she is the Associate Director of Special Projects for the Center for Physical Activity and Nutrition. Lauve has more than twenty-five years of experience in developing wellness programs for research clinical trials and community outreach and at the worksite for Canyon Ranch, Campbell Soup Company, Pratt & Whitney Aircraft and the Florida Governor’s Office. She has been enthusiastically involved in health promotion leadership roles since 1980 including the International Association for Worksite Health Promotion, the Medical Wellness Association, the Wellness Councils of Arizona, the National Fitness Leaders Association, the National Association of Governor's Councils on Physical Fitness and Sports, and the Pentagon’s U.S. Army Expert Civilian Task Force on Health Promotion.
 
Nicolaas P. Pronk, Ph.D., FACSM is the vice president for Health Management at HealthPartners, a large non-profit, member-governed integrated health system in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He is also Health Science Officer for JourneyWell, a division of HealthPartners focused on health and wellness solutions for employers and health plan across the United States and a Senior Research Investigator at the HealthPartners Research Foundation where he conducts research in the area of health behavior change and population health. Dr. Pronk is widely published in the scientific literature and is currently an Editorial Board member for several scientific journals. He is the founding president of the International Association for Worksite Health Promotion (IAWHP). Dr. Pronk is the Senior Editor of the recently published comprehensive and contemporary industry text ACSM’s Worksite Health Handbook, Second Edition.

Barry Hall, FSA is a Principal in the Clinical Health Consulting and Global Technology Solutions practies of Buck Consultants, where he leads global research and consulting on wellness and health care consumerism.  Barry has 27 years of experience in the employee benefits field.  He is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and a recognized expert in health promotion and technology, with numerous awards and publications to his credit.  He is frequently quoted in international news publications such as the Financial Times and the Wall Street Journal and has appeared on CNN, CNBC, and BBC television. 

Wolf Kirsten, M.S. is Founder and President of International Health Consulting based in Berlin, Germany. His company mission is to help international corporations, organizations and governments improve the quality of life of their respective population through innovative, culturally appropriate, and cost-effective health promotion programs. Mr. Kirsten has assisted numerous international corporations with the implementation and coordination of their health promotion programs. His consulting portfolio extends from AsiaPacific to North America to Europe and the Middle East advising companies such as Nokia, Johnson & Johnson, Cisco, and John Deere. Mr. Kirsten teaches post graduate courses in health promotion at the Freie Universität in Berlin and the Hochschule Magdeburg and is a sought after speaker and trainer. He is a German native and lived many years abroad (United States, England, and China).

Charles B. Estey, M.S. is a Senior Vice President of Health Solutions, a national wellness program consulting and management firm, based in Baltimore, Maryland.   Charlie, who is based in Brighton, Michigan, is responsible for business and program development serving clients such as Sears, Walt Disney, CIGNA, Waste Management, Raytheon and Charles Schwab. A pioneer in worksite health and fitness, Charlie has developed numerous award-winning programs for Campbell Soup Company, The Travelers, General Electric, General Motors and Sears. He is a frequent presenter on worksite wellness and customer service and also serves on the Board of Directors for the International Association of Worksite Health Promotion. Charlie has served as an adjunct faculty member for the Yale School of Public Health and currently is a guest lecturer at the University of Michigan.  

Brenda Loube, M.S. is the Principal and Founder of Corporate Fitness Works. Established in 1988, Corporate Fitness Works is a national provider for fitness facility planning, design, and implementation; fitness center management; health and wellness program consulting and oversight. With over 35 years of experience in health and fitness, Brenda has devoted her career to the health promotion and disease prevention field. Brenda was appointed as the chairperson for the Maryland Advisory Council on Physical Fitness, is a member of the board for the International Association for Worksite Health Promotion, a member of the advisory board for the International Council on Active Aging and chairs the Board of Directors for the American Breast Cancer Foundation.
 
John Ruyak is the Consulting Services Manager for Corporate Fitness Works. With over 20 years experience in multiple levels of fitness center management, John specializes in facility design, layout, consulting services, equipment specifications and procurement for Corporate Fitness Works clients. John is degreed in Exercise Science and Architecture and has delivered a wide range of facility design for centers from 1,000 up to 70,000 sq. ft., each equipped to meet specific needs of varied populations.
 
Megan Mansfield is Vice President of Business Development for Corporate Fitness Works. Megan has over 11 years experience in fitness center management and specializes in fitness and wellness program consulting and design with a finite ability of taking client vision for creating a healthy, productive culture and turning it into reality through successful implementation. Megan has a degree in Exercise Science with accomplished skills in strategic business leadership. Her passion for fitness extends into the group exercise arena as she holds multiple instructor certifications and serves as an Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) Examiner.
 
Elisa Denning is Director of Business Development for Corporate Fitness Works and has 10 years experience in delivering corporate fitness and wellness services, with seven years practice in the division of fitness management. Elisa specializes in the area of market and industry research and provides program proposals and implementation with health promotion concepts to support successful client population engagement in on-site fitness and wellness programs. Elisa holds a degree in Kinesiology and is devoted to inspiring others to lead healthy and active lifestyles through her skills in communication, promotion and fitness instruction.
